So, where was I.. oh yes..

We've got The Aviator (my pick), and Man on Fire (my wife's pick)sitting at home and we've not watched them. But we have been very busy lately. Anyways..

All ratings out of *****

I never got around to watching The Aviator and Man on Fire was a disaster of a movie. My wife didn't even finish it.

Man on Fire * - when you put the movie on x2 speed and it's still too slow, there's a problem

Fantastic Four *** - I went into this movie with low expecations and it did better than that. This was by no means a great movie, but it was a nice, family friendly, one with some very funny bits. There were some debates in the City of Heroes forums over whether Jessica Alba (Fantastic Four) or Katie Holmes (Batman Begins) were worse for their respective movies. There was no contest here. Katie Holmes was horrendous in Batman Begins. Jessica Alba may not have been the most convincing research director, but she was better than Mrs. Cruise.

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory ** - I must be getting crotchety in my old age because I definitely found myself comparing it to the earlier version. By and large, I think the original was better. A couple of things that definitely bothered me were Tim Burton's protests of being more faithful to the book while introducing additional background material on Willy Wonka and Johnny Depp's version of the Wonka character.

Did he do a bad job of what he was trying to do? No.
Did what he was trying to do help the movie? No.

Most of the children, save Augustus Gloop (who never has much time) and Veruca Salt, were upgrades over the original version. I especially liked the changes made to Violet Beauregard: true to the original version, yet providing a new slant that really updated it well.

Shaun of the Dead **** - My wife will not admit she liked this movie. But she, along with a couple of our friends, was laughing throughout. This movie is a funny funny movie. There is only one scene that really inspires true discomfort. I highly recommend this movie.

Mr. & Mrs. Smith *** - Both [livejournal.com profile] iridium_wolf and others said "Turn your brain off while watching this movie." In that respect they were right. There are so many ways to rip the actual events to shreads. But it matters little. This is, for lack of a better term, a cute film. Despite the plot holes wide enough to drive an aircraft carrier through, this movie was fun to watch and it's pretty clear both Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie had fun making it.

Hotel Rwanda *****
Big Fish ****
Ocean's Twelve ***
40 Days and 40 Nights ***
Constantine ***
Secret Window **
