A Family of Friends
Jan. 11th, 2005 11:46 amAn odd though crossed my mind this week. Perhaps it's the cold. I thought about my families. There's the family into which I was born: my father; mother; and sister, the family in which I live: my wife and my son, and then there's my other family.
It's a family of a certain group of friends. Among them are
darkwingjhu and
zesh. They may not be the closest of my current friends or even past ones. But this group of friends, time and time again, has proven special.
When we last got together back in late December for Rob's wedding it was like old times. Even though the group of us hadn't all been in the same place in several years. Two of the marriages (mine and Chris and Jenny's) hadn't even happened yet.
And to think all of this happened because of an RPG. Admittedly it was, is and probably will be, the best gaming experience I've ever had. Somehow that group worked in ways so many others didn't. Not to say that the other groups didn't work, just not as well as this one. This one fit perfectly.
We've largely gone our separate ways, spread to six different states and three different time zones. We're now accountants, lawyers, software developers, scriptwriters, and doctors (in training). But when we're together, we're more than old friends, we're family.
Having all of us in the same room again, however briefly, is something that I'll always treasure.
