Trial and error
Dec. 6th, 2004 08:28 amWell Matthew's two month appointment was on Friday and it went well, for the most part. He's up to the 50th percentile in weight, 40th in height, though only 25th in head size. Given my huge cranium, I'm a little surprised by that. But admittedly, my wife's head is not a bowling ball. Well, maybe a duckpin one.
Otherwise he seemed very healthy and so he was given four immunization shots, two in each leg. Let me tell you, that made him cheerful for the rest of the afternoon. We had questions about his lack of cooing and his tendency to look left. I mean really look left, he'll turn right when distracted but generally leans turns his head to the left for some strange reason. Our pediatrician didn't seem terribly concerned about it. If Matthew wasn't cooing by the end of the fourth month, his next appointment, then we might want to be a little concerned. The doctor also said that he wanted us to cut his Prevacid dose in half. That was okay with us, though we were a little nervous about it, since we've been concerned with over medicating him so young. They also gave my wife the flu shot and want me to come in for one as well. Matt's too young for one, but we need to try and lower his risk as much as possible.
On Friday night, since he was already upset by the shots, we left his normal dosage in place and, of all things, he started making little cooing noises. It's kind of odd, but it seems every time we ask a question about something at an appointment that we hope will have already happened, he'll start doing it that night. So all Saturday he was pretty happy as well. We'd joke about things he was saying, blue, shoe, overdue, etc. etc. And it was nice. Saturday night gave him the half dose (now a quarter of a packet) and I was a little concerned because he was pretty cranky afterwards. Not overly so and I thought he might have been just overtired since he was up most of the day. He essentially cried himself to sleep though.
But Sunday he was cranky all day and we had to carry him much more often, much like he was before we started giving him the Prevacid. He couldn't sit still for long and was only relaxed if we put pressure on his stomach. So I spent most of the Ravens game with him laying in my arms, content while face down and his stomach resting upon them, upset while laying on his back.
Last night he cried himself to sleep again and wouldn't sleep contentedly in the crib. He had to be more upright in the carseat. So my wife is calling this morning to see if we can bring the dosage back up or if we should ride it out for a bit longer. Likewise, she'll hopefully schedule a flu shot for me.
