We're so uncool... AWESOME!
Sep. 19th, 2004 11:07 pmSo yesterday, my wife and I went to see Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow with some friends, including
wushi and
beguine. It's a fun movie, if you're not looking for a plot. Since I rarely look for plot in this kind of movie, I had a blast.
But enough off topic rambling. On our way there, my wife and I started singing, for no good reason,
Let's go out to the lobby,
let's go out to the lobby,
let's go out to the lobby,
And have ourselves some snacks.
It's a cute little jingle that anyone of our generation, who went to the movies would recognize. But it's not played any more. Both of us realized simultaneously that our child(ren) will have no idea what we're doing when we sing things like that. The phrase, "we're so uncool" crossed our mind. The next thing that crossed our mind was, "We're one step closer to being parents! Yes!"
I think ultimately, one of the prime steps in becoming a good parent is accepting one's own inherent uncoolness. If one works hard to maintain a certain level of coolness, then they're working too hard for themselves and therefore not working hard enough for their children. Being a parent means sacrifices, even down to how cool you are.
There is a different kind of cool that comes with being a parent, but that only comes from how you treat your children.
