Using someone else's words for this
Sep. 11th, 2008 09:49 amI was at work when the September 11th attacks happened. I can recall the slight chill that went through the building after the first plane hit, though not for the reasons you'd expect.
1) Everyone thought it was some idiot in a cessna who smacked into the building, not a passenger airliner. Visuals weren't that easily accessible back then.
2) My organization used to be based out of the Empire State Building and a number of employees were killed when a B-12 Marauder crashed into it.
Until we got more details, the magnitude of what had happened didn't really set in.
Afterwards there was much the usual handwringing, rage, fretting all the usual things one would expect. A friend of mine contributed a piece to an Ethiopian english language newspaper on the subject. And while it's a bit more declarative in its statements (he was writing for the hard left-leaning audience) than I really believe, the underlying sentiment spoke to what I hoped would happen after the attacks.
